Renal impairment – Nursing assessments and considerations

Renal impairment is an adverse effect of certain medications, such as ketorolac.

Renal impairment could be associated with fatigue, edema, irritability, decreased hematocrit (Hematocrit determines percentage of red blood cells (RBCs) per fluid volume of blood), altered electrolytes (such as potassium (K+) and sodium (Na+)), and decreased BUN and creatinine (BUN is blood urea nitrogen – The normal value of BUN could be affected by tissue breakdown, protein intake, and changes in fluid volume).

In case of renal impairment, nurses may consider good skin care (Nursing consideration in many cases, such as liver impairment, superinfection, and delayed allergic reaction), diet and fluid restrictions, electrolyte replacement, rest, and dialysis.

Zusammenfassung in deutscher Sprache (Summary in German language)
