AT&T would start the data only plans within the next two years

AT&T is working on the future technology – by mid-2014 – when only the data will be sent and received through the smartphones, as more of the wireless customers are using the smartphones for data transfer only rather than voice calls at this time.

Randall Stephenson, AT&T CEO, “I’ll be surprised if, in the next 24 months, we don’t see people in the market place with data-only plans. I just think that’s inevitable.”

People would stop using the voice or texting plans as they would be able to transmit voice through services like Skype or Apple’s facetime. There are also third party solutions for texting. AT&T has seen a decrease in the total number of minutes used per month as reported by the company management.

Stephenson expects this as a gradual shift to the data only usage by the customer by the next two years. He compared this gradual shift to the transition from the fixed landlines to cellular telephones.

Stephenson stated “It’s not us going out and mandating this. The content guys are coming in asking for it. If you don’t allow those kinds of models to flourish, you’re going to inhibit the potential of these services.“
