“Un-printer” will help to remove toner from the printed paper

PapersScientists have tested a machine that can clean the documents i.e. opposite function to that of the printer. They have named it as “un-printer”.

Researchers from University of Cambridge have demonstrated “laser un-printer” that is able to remove toner from the paper. They have reported that the toner-print can be efficiently removed without causing any significant damage to the paper, so that the paper can easily be reused without discarding it or sending it to a recycling plant. However, more and more usage of paper through un-printing would damage the paper i.e. would yellow the paper.

This “un-printer” is the combination of low-energy laser scanning technology, copiers and printers.

Dr Julian M. Allwood, Leader of the Low Carbon Materials Processing Group at the University of Cambridge, said, “What we need to do now is find someone to build a prototype. Thanks to low-energy laser scanners and laser-jet printers, the feasibility for reusing paper in the office is there.”

Moreover, it would also decrease the use of trees for new paper production and “reusing paper could save an additional 50-80% in carbon emissions over recycling.”

Dr. Allwood further said, “Material recovery through reusing eliminates the forestry step from the life cycle of paper and eradicates emissions arising from paper incineration or decomposition in landfill.”
