Escherichia coli (E. coli) is a bacterium that has cell wall, cell membrane, pili, cytoplasm, DNA, ribosomes, and flagella. It is approximately 3 µm (microns) in length.

It is usually found in the lower intestine from where it can be deposited into fecal material from where it reaches waterways from where the disease causing E. coli is transmitted.

Regarding types, mostly E. coli are beneficial as they help in keeping intestinal tract healthy, whereas harmful bacteria, such as Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC) and Enterotoxigenic E. coli (ETEC) are also there that can become the cause of diarrhea or illness outside of the intestinal tract.

Zusammenfassung in deutscher Sprache (Summary in German language)
