Beneficial viruses

Beneficial viruses (*a.l.) may include cytomegalovirus, herpes virus, bacteriophage, retrovirus, seneca valley virus-001, pararetrovirus, and polyhedrosis virus.

Herpes viruses and cytomegaloviruses could help in the suppression of HIV infection. Latent herpes viruses also work with natural killer cells in the body. These natural killer cells are important for immune system and help in killing virally infected cells and mammalian tumor cells.

Bacteriophages help in protecting against disease causing bacteria and found in mammalian gastrointestinal tracts, and modify the expression of bacterial genes involved in host digestion.

Retroviruses help in regulating gene expressions in brain and help in obtaining reverse transcriptase enzyme for transmission of genetic elements.

Seneca valley virus-001 helps in fighting against cancer and causes no toxic effects.

Pararetroviruses help in protecting plants against disease-causing viruses.

Polyhedrosis virus helps in the biocontrol of crop pathogens (e.g., bollworms).
