Neutrinos are faster than light [Update]

Scientists have confirmed that neutrinos travel faster than light. This confirmation has been done by the same team of researchers, which previously reported that neutrinos are faster than light, with an improved version of the experiment.

In this improved version, scientists used shorter bunches of neutrinos rather than long bunches of neutrinos as criticized for the previous experiment. Work has been submitted to the Arxiv repository and has been submitted to the Journal of High Energy Physics and has yet to be reviewed by the scientific community.

The experiment has been done by the OPERA (Oscillation Project with Emulsion (T)racking Apparatus) collaboration.

Antonio Ereditato of the Opera collaboration, said to BBC News,

“This is reinforcing the previous finding and ruling out some possible systematic errors which could have in principle been affecting it.”

Confirmation of this result by further experiments like that done in MINOS in USA and T2Kin Japan will weaken one of the basic principles of modern physics.
